Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford began performing in her teen years and joined part of the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor for the school. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth attempt she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was a part of such television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Her regular work in theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, which were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
